London is unarguably one of the most beautiful cities in winter and especially during Christmas time. If you’re planning to spend your time in South London, you can do the following and a lot more during this festive season.
Christmas by the River
The banks of the River Thames (London Bridge and Tower Bridge) will be home to the annual Christmas by the River. With views of Tower of London and Tower Bridge, plus a combination of gifts and hot food sold from German-style chalets, it’s a festive way to spend an hour or so. Until 5 January 2020.
Enchanted Eltham Palace
Make the most of winter evenings with an enchanting experience of light, colour and sound as the grounds of Eltham Palace are transformed into an illuminated world. Uncover magical secrets hidden deep within the grounds, including dancing fairies and extraordinary talking trees. There will also be fairground rides and games, mulled wine and tempting mince pies and Christmas gifts in the shop. On until 22 December.
Dine at Winter Igloos
Snuggle up and eat and drink in one of London’s pop-up winter igloos. These beautiful igloos are popping up everywhere. Coppa Club igloos right next to Tower Bridge is London’s most Instagrammable winter spots. The igloos have taken on a woodland theme, with candles and cosy blankets, and those south London riverside views! The igloos at Jimmy’s Lodge in South Bank are planted beneath festoon-lit trees and overlooking the Thames. The cosy fairy-lit domes are made from real glass and have a beautiful view over the river.
Hot Chocolate
London has some incredible hot chocolates to indulge in during the winter. The best festive cup of pure liquid chocolate dream in South London has to be at Peckham’s Melange (run by chocolatier Isabelle Alaya). The 70% dark hot chocolate drink is rich and chocolatey, but the salted caramel option is outrageously delicious and is their biggest hit. For a more exotic fix, try the white chocolate version tweaked with matcha tea. Sugar-free, dairy-free, vegan and gluten-free variations are also readily available.
Ice Skating
Winter ice skating is always hugely popular in London. This year, the Queen’s House in Greenwich will host South London’s only outdoor ice rink. Set against the stunning backdrop of The Queen’s House, the ice rink offers skaters the chance to skate in the beautiful surrounds of a UNESCO World Heritage site, take in the spectacular views across London and enjoy warming treats from the food and drink stalls.
Christmas Markets
The most magical part of Christmas in London is its many Christmas Markets. Get into the festive moods with food, drinks, shopping and entertainment at the Southbank Centre, Christmas by the River at London Bridge City, Tate Modern Christmas market, Greenwich market at Christmas, Kingston Christmas market and many more.
