You can hear three local authors talk about their books, meet them and buy personalised copies at an event at the Old College Library, Dulwich College this coming Monday, 9 November. There will be a film maker and some wine there too.
Mireille Galinou will be talking about her recently published book, ‘The Dulwich Notebook’
The Dulwich Notebook is a new breed of London guidebook. The publication is about Dulwich now and what makes Dulwich such a special place to live. The publication brings together historians, traders and residents who all played a significant part in the making of Dulwich as a modern neighbourhood. The author, Mireille Galinou, is a London historian – for many years a curator at the Museum of London.

Ingrid Beazley will give a slide presentation on her books, ‘Street Art Fine Art’

These books document a three year project during which street artists from all over the world created works in and around Dulwich inspired the 17th and 18th century paintings in Dulwich Picture Gallery. This collection of street art has become Dulwich Outdoor Gallery . Curator Ingrid Beazley draws parallels between classic and contemporary styles, showcasing how works by painters such as Rembrandt, Gainsborough, Rubens, Van Dyck and Murillo have influenced works by street artists working in the local area such as Stik, Conor Harrington, Thierry Noir, Phlegm and RUN. The books contain not only Ingrid’s commentary but that of the artists and incorporates the views of the general public.

Jan Piggott will talk about two books. ‘Dulwich College A History’
Hardback copy of Dr Jan Piggott’s new definitive history of the College. Many contemporary ‘school histories’ are a mixture of prospectus and chatter, but Dulwich College: A History is the chronicle a large and great school deserves. It is the first full history, scholarly, anecdotal and accessible, and is generously illustrated with telling images, many unfamiliar.
Two chapters describe the extraordinary life and enterprises of the Founder, Edward Alleyn. The daily life, fortunes and personalities of the College are also traced. The book gives a rich account of the rise of the great Alleynian tribe and a detailed account is given of music, drama, sport, art and literature. It covers the involvement of the College over the centuries with Alleyn’s bequest of the Dulwich estate that nourished it, and the history of the famous Picture Gallery. ‘Wodehouse’s School Days – Dulwich College and the School Stories’
PG Wodehouse was at Dulwich College from 1894 to 1900. Between 1902 and 1911, by youthful alchemy, he transformed the primary material of his late Victorian experience at a great new public school into a fascinating body of fiction, now almost neglected in the shade of his more popular books.
The book includes copious material from the Dulwich College Archives, as well as over twenty original illustrations from the school novels and tales. The author, Dr Jan Piggott, FSA, was formerly Head of English and Keeper of the Archives at Dulwich College.
